I spent 4 and a half years as the artist and animator for a company making iPhone games –
The Other Player. During this time I did concepts, character design, animation – my tools were Adobe Illustrator and Flash. Something else I did was backgrounds (layouts) for the games.
I’m so proud of this work and when I woke up this morning I realized I haven’t shared very much of it, which feels like a total shame and a waste of good art work. So I plunked myself down, went image-hunting, and pulled up some goodies to share with you! I hope you enjoy seeing them.
This is the outside of the bakery for this particular game. Notice the ’emotional flour sack’ in the window. He’s a ‘character’ that most classically-trained animators have worked with while learning the ropes. It’s considered a classic because Disney Veterans Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston featured him in their amazing book Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life.
The bakery seating area. This was fun to make, I added Swedish Lussekatter in the glass case because I love them.
This is a counter top for a scene in the bakery game. It needed to be relatively bare so that overlaying text wouldn’t conflict.
Here’s a layout for a very relaxing and fancy hotel room.
This is a layout for a pumpkin game, I tried to use a lot of colours from It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown because – well, why not? It seemed appropriate.
This is a mock-up of some characters in a street scene.
Another instance of a background without the character.
This scarecrow was going to feature in a few different games, here is is – Outstanding in his Field.
Here’s a forest cave scene, minus the character who would be standing in the middle.
Here’s a layout featuring a little guy way too happy about his peas.
Here’s a background featuring a very weary tooth fairy.
This mock-up is of a scene in another game.
This is another mock-up featuring a character in a spooky scene.
This is a river side scene for a particular game.
Here’s another layout that has the troll character plunked in.
This is a background for a police game.
Another score screen featuring bamboo, this time in a more soothing colour-way.
Here’s a layout for a score screen.
A fruit stand layout waiting to be filled with the fruit I drew.
An under water background scene.
Another under-sea layout for a watery game.
Here’s a layout for a Hammer Horror-type game.
It’s a Frankenstein’s Castle background for the Hammer Horror-esque game.
Here’s a mock-up of a very precarious situation – I can’t imagine those eggs staying intact on a bumpy country road.
Here’s a game play mock-up for a cookie game.
This is a mock-up of the gameboard for a cookie game.
