Little Red Riding Hood – Concept Art, Layout, and Bonus Animated Gif!

Red Riding Hood Character Concept Art - The Other Player Art by Beth Carson
These were some of my earliest drawings of Red Riding Hood. I really like these two, especially the droopy balloon – as she was intended to be a quiet emo Red Riding Hood.

So, having shown off some layouts yesterday I thought today I’d go through some concept art for a Red Riding Hood game.  There were lots of fairy tale characters in this game but I’m just going to focus on Red for now.  I did a lot of preliminary sketches before settling on the final design.  There are some restrictions while designing for games – the animation cannot be too complicated or it will take up way too much memory!  So, everything has to be kept pretty simple.  Once a design was chosen, I built the character in Illustrator.

I really want to share more of the animation from these games, but it takes time.  First, there is a LOT of animation, for all the games we did, not just this one.  Most of the sequences are very short (12-24 frame) looping animations,  and none are on a background.  So if I want to make a video or an animated gif of them I have to gather 3, 4 or 5 sequences together, then composite them into a ‘scene’ which can be pretty time consuming.  But, because I like you, I did one today:

Voila, Little Red Riding Hood in her Scene!

So, I hope you enjoyed the little behind-the-scenes peek into one of the games I worked on!  Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more art!
